CITY OF MALOLOS — Around 100 fish farmers from the municipalities of Bulakan, Calumpit, Hagonoy, and City of Malolos successfully completed their 16-week Fish Farmers’ Field School on Polyculture of Shrimp and Tilapia in Brackishwater Pond using green water technology and were recognized in a graduation ceremony conducted by the Provincial Agriculture Office on Tuesday, May 26, at Hiyas ng Bulacan Convention Center here.
The program, which is in partnership between the Provincial Government of Bulacan and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 3, taught 74 male and 26 female fish farmers the effective ways to properly take care of shrimps and tilapia using green water technology, or the eco-friendly approach to aquaculture.
Editha De Leon, 52 and a participant from the City of Malolos, shared how the program helped expand her knowledge in aquaculture, saying that her learnings would be of great use to tap the potentials of her fish pond.
“Malaking bagay po [ito], hindi kasi [dahil] may hawak nang palaisdaan, akala mo alam mo na lahat. Pero kapag uma-attend ka sa mga ganitong gawain, ang dami mong matututunan at lahat ng natutunan namin kapag in-apply namin ‘yon, malaking bagay na makakatulong sa ‘ming hanapbuhay,” she said.
Likewise, 43-year-old Nelson Villafuerte from Bulakan expressed his gratitude to the organizers for giving them the opportunity to broaden their understanding and skills in fish farming. He also urged other fish farmers to participate in this kind of activity.
Meanwhile, Governor Daniel R. Fernando congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to cooperate with the Provincial Government to maintain the good standing of agriculture and aquaculture in the province.
“Congratulations to our graduates. I believe that the language of Bulacan will continue to thrive in the capacity of agriculture and fishing. The government and the people just need to work together towards a prosperous livelihood,” he said through his representative.
“You can be sure that we will not stop implementing measures [that] will increase your catch and income,” the People’s Governor added.
