GOV. FERNANDO SHOWS HOW RESTRAINT AND RESPECT CAN AVOID CONFLICT

Our nation’s strength lies not only in its laws and policies but in the character of its leaders. Recent reports from the Philippine Senate have highlighted unprofessional conduct among some members, including the use of harsh language, public confrontations, and the dissemination of unsubstantiated claims against colleagues and the media. Such behavior raises critical questions regarding the standards expected of public servants.

In a nation striving to become “One Body, One Philippines,” such conduct undermines the unity we urgently require. Public leaders are expected to set an example by uniting rather than dividing. Every word spoken from a position of power carries weight, shaping how citizens interact and how the nation is perceived globally.

Fortunately, some leaders demonstrate dignified service. When a recent road rage incident involving Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando and DILG Secretary Juanito Victor “JonVic” Remulla Jr. could have escalated, Governor Fernando chose a constructive path. In interviews, he remained calm, avoided inflammatory language, and focused on solutions rather than assigning blame. His restraint and respect, even in difficult circumstances, demonstrate true leadership.

All public servants are bound by ethical codes requiring professionalism. Mechanisms exist to address violations, ranging from reprimands to formal discipline. As citizens, we have the right to demand better for ourselves and for future generations who require honorable role models.

Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! True leadership is not about shouting the loudest or winning every argument; it is about building bridges, showing grace, and remembering that we all serve the same people: the Filipino nation.
