The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is enhancing community safety in Barangay Alua, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija, by completing a 338-linear meter flood control structure along the Pampanga River ahead of schedule.
According to Nueva Ecija 2nd District Engineer Elpidio Y. Trinidad, these engineering interventions are designed to hold and slow down floodwaters, thereby reducing their peak flow downstream.
Trinidad also emphasized that the construction of the P72.4-million concrete slope protection, built with steel sheet pile foundations, plays a vital role in preserving Barangay Alua as a flood-free community and mitigating flood hazards.
“As a result, this project enhances agricultural production, ensures food security, and prevents damage to properties and livelihoods caused by the risk of collapsing riverbanks within the community,” Trinidad said.
Meanwhile, Assistant District Engineer Robert Jay Panaligan pointed out that the flood mitigation project involves the construction of a 6.2-meter-high concrete slope protection, a 1-meter-high parapet wall, and cross drains to divert floodwater away from nearby houses.
“Residents of Barangay Alua can benefit greatly from the flood mitigation project by preventing harm to individuals and property, minimizing land disturbance, and improving transportation on the project’s road dike,” Panaligan added.
This flood control structure is an integral component of a comprehensive flood management project along the Pampanga River, connecting Barangay Alua through several barangays in San Isidro to Barangay Bagong Sikat, Cabiao.
