Bey to reinforce Magnolia in PBA’s Commissioner’s Cup

Magnolia has tapped a defense-oriented player in Tyler Bey as the Hotshots’ import when the PBA’s Season 48 kicks off with the Commissioner’s Cup on October 15.

The Hotshots team governor Rene Pardo said they have come to terms and have already signed the American import.

“Yes, (he) signed the contract already,” said team’s governor.

Known for his athleticism, the 25-year-old Bey was named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year while playing for Colorado in college.

He was eventually selected 36th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2020 NBA draft, but eventually signed a deal with the Dallas Mavericks where he played 18 games during the 2020-21 NBA season.

Listed at 6-7, Bey could complement Magnolia’s new and improved front court that now includes a vastly improved young slotman in James Laput and Abu Tratter, whom the team acquired in a trade a few months back.

The Hotshots will also welcome the return of veteran big man Ian Sangalang as the new season rolls by, while forward Calvin Abueva is expected to bring in his energy and rebounding.

Magnolia is fresh off an 11-game sweep of the PBA On Tour under 2018 PBA Coach of the Year Chito Victolero.

The Hotshots hope to contend for the Commissioner’s Cup, which Barangay Ginebra ruled last season after outlasting foreign squad Bay Area Dragons in a seven-game Finals series.
