FIRST DISTRICT, Pampanga – Congressman Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. filed House Resolution No. 635 on January 5, 2026 extending condolences to the family of the late Marissa Sanchez, one of the country’s pioneer female tennis players.
Sanchez is credited for bagging the Philippines’ first medal in tennis during the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 1977, and for winning the National Open and the Philippine Tennis Association Open in 1975.
“Isa si Marissa Sanchez sa mga premyadong atleta ng bansa sa larangan ng tennis, kaya nararapat lang na siya ay bigyang pugay,” Lazatin said.
Sanchez began her tennis career at Holy Angel University when she was just 12 years old.
Following her retirement from professional tennis in the 1980s, she devoted her time as a mentor and coach for Angeleño athletes.
Lazatin notes that it is only appropriate to extend condolences to Sanchez’ bereaved family in recognition of her outstanding achievements and contribution to Philippine Sports development, and her dedication to mentoring the next generation of Filipino athletes.
