Forest River Park boosts river conservation in Bulacan

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently turned over the new Forest River Park Project to the City Government of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan wherein the riverside green space is designed to boost river protection, raise environmental awareness, and give locals a safe, sustainable spot for recreation.

Located in Towerville, Barangay Minuyan Proper, the Forest River Park serves as a model green space that supports community participation, sustainable urban development, and river conservation under the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program.

The project transforms a portion of the Chalo River easement into a public area that encourages environmental stewardship while helping protect the river and its surrounding ecosystem from encroachment and pollution.

DENR Regional Executive Director Ralph Pablo said on Thursday the project demonstrates how environmental protection can be integrated into urban development.

“The Forest River Park serves as an example of how development and environmental preservation may coexist. In addition to improving the environment, we are fostering greater environmental awareness and stewardship among communities by protecting existing trees and transforming river easements into sustainable public spaces,” Pablo said.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Rolly Mulato underscored the importance of collaboration among government agencies, local authorities, and community stakeholders in bringing the project to fruition.

“This project is more than just the opening of a park. It is evidence of what can be accomplished when people work together with a common goal of protecting the environment. The Forest River Park reflects our shared commitment to safeguarding natural resources while creating spaces that will benefit both present and future generations,” Mulato said.

The City Government of San Jose del Monte reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the facility to ensure its long-term sustainability.

A ceremonial turnover of tree seedlings was also conducted, marking the continued partnership between DENR and the local government in advancing urban greening and environmental conservation initiatives.

The park features a riverside view deck overlooking the Chalo River, eco-friendly recreational facilities, shaded seating areas integrated within existing tree stands, and landscaped open spaces designed to enhance public appreciation of natural resources while preserving the ecological integrity of the area.

Beyond providing residents of Towerville and nearby communities with an accessible green space for leisure and exercise, the park is envisioned to serve as a venue for environmental education, river conservation advocacy, and community-led sustainability activities.

To date, DENR has established 27 linear parks across Central Luzon under the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program, reinforcing efforts to restore waterways, expand urban green spaces, and foster stronger community participation in environmental protection.
