NAIA ceiling collapse sparks safety concerns, calls for accountability

The ceiling collapse at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 has raised serious concerns over the safety of airport users, with labor group PUSO ng NAIA warning that the incident may reflect deeper systemic failures in maintenance and oversight.

Romy Sauler, Head Secretariat of PUSO ng NAIA, said the accident should not be treated as an isolated case, pointing to possible lapses in inspection, maintenance, and accountability among airport operators and regulators.

He stressed that airport users have been paying higher fees under the modernization program tied to the agreement between the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), yet safety and service standards remain in question.

The group identified key issues, including alleged deficiencies in maintenance, gaps in regulatory oversight, the absence of independent technical monitoring, and the continued financial burden on airport users despite substandard conditions.

PUSO ng NAIA also raised concerns over the collection of higher fees ahead of the full delivery of the proposed ₱170-billion investment, saying this places added strain on the public amid rising living costs.

NNIC General Manager Lito Alvarez said the incident occurred at around 10:43 a.m. on April 3 at the Terminal 1 arrival extension area, injuring seven people who were immediately given medical attention and are now in stable condition.

The DOTr has directed the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to coordinate with NNIC in conducting an investigation, as calls mount for greater transparency, safety audits, and accountability from both the operator and government regulators.
