Congressman Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. enjoys a light snack at local shawarma shop, Shawar-Manna, at the Walking Street in Fields Avenue, Angeles City.
The Walking Street in Fields Avenue is home to a variety of cuisines from different countries, partly owed to its long history of catering as an entertainment hub for foreign tourists – some of whom would later settle in the city as ‘expats’.
Back in 2022, during his time as Angeles City Mayor, Cong Pogi had sought to reimagine the erstwhile entertainment district into a more family-friendly location for gastrotourism – patterned after the Rua Nova do Carvalho or ‘Pink Street’ in Lisbon, Portugal.
The first step taken for this rebranding was through renaming the street to ‘Red Street’ via a city ordinance sponsored by Councilor Arvin Suller in the 19th Sangguniang Panlungsod.
Among the provisions of the said ordinance is a five-hour al fresco dining experience, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., along the entire stretch of the street.
Under the then Mayor Pogi, the Angeles City Government had partnered with Architect Michael Ponio for the design of the Red Street.
To this end, the city government had also allotted ₱14.5 million for the rehabilitation of drainage and roads in Fields Avenue.
On August 19, 2025, the 20th Sangguniang Panlungsod of Angeles City passed City Ordinance 747, s-2025 reverting the street’s name to ‘Walking Street’.
