With the completion of a 245-linear-meter flood mitigation structure along the Rio Chico River in Barangay Calem, Guimba, Nueva Ecija, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has strengthened the community’s protection against seasonal flooding, offering residents greater peace of mind.
Nueva Ecija 1st OIC-Assistant District Engineer Ferdinand Llamas noted that the newly completed section reinforces existing defenses in the area.
“This municipality is known for its vast farmlands, which serve as the primary source of livelihood for residents. Thus, this P52.4-million project is a vital step in protecting our local communities. By helping mitigate flood risks, we are enhancing the safety of homes and properties while supporting the agricultural sector,” he said.
Llamas emphasized that flood control projects have long contributed to preserving farmlands by helping prevent floodwaters from inundating crops.
“With this structure in place, farmers can cultivate their lands with greater confidence, potentially reducing losses and supporting agricultural productivity,” he added.
Beyond agricultural benefits, the project has improved public safety and infrastructure resilience in Barangay Calem, providing residents with a more secure living environment amid the threat of rising river levels.
